Are you tired of forking over an arm and a leg for economy class airfare? If so you’ll want to check out this guide I’ve just stumbled across from Travel Top Secrets, called Discover What the Airlines Never Tell You: Former Airline Employee Tells All.Cheap Flights to Florida Guide

It shouldn’t be hard to find cheap flights to Florida.  In fact, flying and going to the airport shouldn’t be a rough experience, but many people see it that way.  Ironically, many of the common problems people complain about with the airlines are ones that you could be compensated for.  What’s more is that you can also fly more comfortably in business class or first class without having to pay any more than you would for an economy ticket, if you know the right approach.  Most of these tactics are ones that the average flyer will never know about.  Judith Nordheimer, a former airline employee, is letting the cat out of the bag in this guide though.

It covers topics like:

  • Powerful strategies for getting the cheapest airfare (and taking less time to find it)
  • Upgrading to first or business class for free
  • How to get hundreds of dollars and free tickets if your flight was canceled or overbooked (and how to do it by design)
  • Using standby tickets to fly for pennies on the dollar
  • Racking up huge numbers of miles from your mileage program, even if you rarely fly
  • Luggage delayed?  Here, take this money as compensation for your troubles

Airfare can be expensive if you don’t know how to look and what tools and resources will get you the best price.  Below is a list of 10 ways to help find cheap flights to Florida.  Some of them you may have heard of before, some you likely haven’t.  If some of the tips don’t make sense as to why they help cut the price of your airfare, refer to last week’s post on the basics of flying to Florida cheaply.

  1. Start looking for your tickets early.  This means that, in general, you should try to schedule any trips you’re going to want to make significantly ahead of time.  You should buy your tickets at least three weeks before your flight, but start looking around even earlier.
  2. Don’t necessarily purchase your tickets the first time you look.  There can be unforeseen fluctuations in ticket prices, the more options you have time to look through, the better your chances of getting a good deal.  Don’t push it any later than the timeframe described in the first point though.
  3. Maintain flexibility in your scheduling.  To find the best prices, you’ll need to be able to change the time of your flight and possibly the duration of your stay.  Most of the other points are dependent on your ability to do this.Fly to Florida Cheaply
  4. Try to fly in and out on off days.  Fewer people fly in the middle of the week, so it costs less.  This almost always includes Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, sometimes Monday can be included as well.
  5. Fly at uncommon times.  Flights are going in and out all the time regardless of the number of people who are on a flight.  Discounts are often given for “red eye” flights or those in the middle of the night.
  6. Avoid common flight dates during the holidays.
  7. Consider buying from ticket consolidators.  They buy in bulk so they can often offer very cheap flights to Florida.  Some are scams though, so be cautious when looking.
  8. Consider buying your tickets as part of a travel package that may include a place to stay and entertainment.  Under certain circumstances, these packages may actually cost less than airfare alone.
  9. Look for sales from airlines.  This is a more viable option if you’re looking even further ahead of time than the normal recommendations.
  10. If possible, make your trip last between 7 to 30 days.  In some cases, there are minimum and maximum stay durations for best prices.  Buying from consolidators may circumvent these restrictions.

If you’re looking for cheap flights to Florida, you must first understand how and why airline prices fluctuate.  The prices aren’t arbitrary; they are controlled largely by the economic principle of supply and demand.  This is common sense when you think about it, but you don’t always think about it.  So to find cheap flights to Florida, you want to buy when there is the largest supply and the lowest demand.

One of the biggest factors influencing cost is time.  This can be the time of the flight or the time you buy the tickets.

Cheap Flights to FloridaWhen you buy several weeks ahead of time, the cost is going to be substantially lower.  Most of the time, purchasing tickets at least two or three weeks prior to your flight is recommended.  The supply is the largest at this time, not to mention that having the option of traveling on short notice can be considered a courtesy.  For last minute flights the cost is going to be much higher and you’ll have fewer options, so whenever possible try to plan your trip a good ways ahead of time.

If you don’t mind staying a few days later or getting to your destination a few days earlier, you’re likely to be able to get better prices.  Flexibility goes a long way when it comes to getting cheap flights to Florida.  Flights during the middle of the week are less popular (lower demand), and will often cost less as a result.  The same can be said about the time of your flight.  If you’re willing to leave in the middle of the night, “red eye” flights are also less strenuous on your wallet.

Apply the same principles to holiday flights.  If it is common or makes sense to go out the Friday before a holiday and come back the Sunday after, the cost is going to be much higher.  Be uncommon in your holiday travel plans.

There are also some seasonal fluctuations for prices that aren’t related to holidays, but this can be harder to read.  This is less of a consideration for domestic flights than overseas ones, but it does influence price to a degree.

The more options you have the better, so with an open mind and an open schedule, you can make slight alterations to the dates for better prices.  Although the tips given prior describe general trends, the fluctuations in prices for specific flights can be harder to read.  You can manually tweak the dates yourself or you can use services that have a flexible dating option, such as Travelocity, Orbitz, and Kayak.
